Otra vez Murphy / Murphy again

"Todo lo que pueda salir mal, saldrá mal" dice la versión más popular de la Ley de Murphy. Hace algo más de un mes, perdí la hélice del barco, lo cual ya es un hecho insólito (quiero creer que no me la robaron), por lo que tuve que encargar una nueva, que recibí esta semana por correo desde la fábrica de Barcelona.

"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" says the most popular version of Murphy's law. A little more than a month ago, I lost the boat's propeller, which it's a rare event itself (I think it was lost, not stolen) and therefore I ordered a new one, received last week by mail from the Barcelona factory.

Sacar el barco del agua fue fácil, colocar la chaveta en el chavetero fue fácil, instalar la hélice en el eje fue fácil, insertar la arandela en la hélice fue fácil. Y en el último paso, cuando ya solo faltaba enroscar la tuerca para fijar la hélice se produjo el desastre: la tuerca no entraba ni a tiros.

To take the boat out of the water was easy, to put the lock into its place was easy, to install the propeller in the shaft was easy, to insert the washer in the propeller was easy. So in the last step to finish, when the only action was to screw the nut to fix the propeller the disaster came: the nut didn't fit the thread.

Hicieron falta 5 horas ocupando a media docena de personas (todo el que pasaba por allí daba su opinión con aire de experto), 3 viajes a por sendas herramientas a poblaciones no más cercanas de 5 kilómetros, y una buena dosis de cabreo y mosqueos varios, hasta que que el problema se hizo patente: ¡¡la tuerca se enroscaba al revés!! La fábrica había enviado una tuerca de la medida correcta pero con la rosca invertida.

It was needed 5 hours, half a dozen people giving their respective "expert" opinion, 3 trips to search different tools to places no less than 3 miles away, and an important anger before finding the problem: the nut had an inverted thread!! The factory sent the right nut but with an inverted thread.

Afortunadamente, Josetxu, el mecánico, tenía otra tuerca de la misma medida y con rosca hacia el otro lado así que finalmente el barco pudo ir al agua con la hélice instalada. Eso sí, toda la tarde del sábado perdida por una tontería. Gracias, Murphy.

Fortunately, Josetxu had another nut of the same size and right thread so the boat could finally be launched again with the new propeller installed. However, all the saturday afternoon and evening were lost. Thanks, Murphy.
