Once at Madrid, where I was to stay during the year's end as a guest of Coky's family, the weather was still fine and bright inviting to do some short day trip. Coky opened her long time used roadmap looking for some inspiration. We inmediately decided to go to Avila, 60 miles to the west, running along the Imperial Route (M-505 road) in her Volkswagen.

Avila is a perfect sample of a provincial capital city. It's a very beautiful medieval city which still owns the impressive walls sourrounding the original old town, all of them in very good status. This city made the visitor feel like living in the far past. I remember I visited it when I was a child during one of the many travels with my tirelesses parents but I couldn't get a single specific recall but the real cold it was, quite logic if we know that Avila is more than 1000 meters above the sea level.

This is also Saint Teresa de Jesus home city who respecting to religious affairs beated by far poor Saint Joan of Arc (Joan just listened some voices, while Teresa really met all the main celestial staff) and it was here where she wrote her most known book: Las moradas.

I sincerely recommend you this place for visiting.

Back from Barcelona I left Helena with her mother and I just had time enough to take a look to Lady Chatterley before following my way to Madrid, inmediately after. The travel Bilbao-Madrid by bus is as boring as counting your toes.
Fortunately, my restless brother Albar, God bless him for long years, sent this superinteresting document to me, giving the definitive answer to the problem I stated to my hairdresser Agustin (see the post Erreka).

In that post I asked Agustin about how many kilometers the hairs he had cut in his life would run along putting them in a row. Albar promised he would calculate it (he is that movie style scientific who is able to build clouds, or to analize a alien body, or to explain the behaviour of hertz waves in the troposphere) and he did it.

Here you can find his handwritten demostration. The non spanish speakers can just read the numbers, the upper number is the optimistic calculation and the lower one is the realistic calculation. It made my trip much more amusing, specially when I compared the distances. Is there any graphologyst in the room? if any... would he be so kind to make a psychologic profile of the author, please?

La asombrosa vorágine del fin del 2007 (I) / The amazing maelstrom of 2007's ending (I)

Is there anyone here so brave to stand the whole christmas time next to the family? Ahá, I knew it!! It hasn't anything to do with love, of course, it's just a matter related to the basic need of personal space. Patologic cases apart, any regular person who spend more than a week living with the family in these dates will feel the urgent need of killing someone. And more, does anybody know why whatever-inlaw sounds so ugly?

An independence addict like me doesn't even need one whole week to feel so, is already done in less than 3 days. So I went for a lone walkthrough around my dear Barcelona which is always a beautiful place to visit and the only big city I could live in, if necessary.

There's so much written about Barcelona that I won't add anymore. I just post some pics taken along my walk from Catalunya place to the Port. During my some months stay for work here in 2006 I learned to enjoy these streets and this weather so I love being back from time to time and getting lost in the latin district.

By the way, december 28th is the Saints Innocents Day and... my wedding anniversary since I married Ana the same day that far 1991. I'm serious, you can check it... ;-)

Aprendiendo / Learning

We were in the Barcelona airport, waiting for our flight back to Bilbao, after spending the Christmas with my family. I was quietly reading while Helena walked along the terminal. She finally came to me and asked for something she could read also. In my backbag I just carried a comicbook by Quino, whose intrincate and adult sense of humour was not probably the easiest thing to understand for Helena. Anyway I hadn't any other book so I gave it to her. She took it , sat down and read it in a row.

- ¿Ya te lo has acabado, Helena? - le pregunté asombrado.
- Did you finish, Helena? - I asked her quite amazed.
- Sí
- Yes
- ¿Y lo has entendido?
- And did you understand it?
- No
- No
- Do you want us to read it together so I could explain to you anything you couldn't catch?
- Sí, sí, por favor...
- Yes, yes, please please...

It was obvious she was wishing to read it so we opened the comicbook by its very first page and watch every drawing. I explained to her some basic things about the use of symbols and some tricks to interpret them. In a few minutes she already could understand almost everything she watched and even more, she could catch the jokes and laugh of them.

When she arrived to some crude ironic drawings about justice (in the pic) she turned to me and said:

- ¿Sabes una cosa, aitatxu? ¡Esto sí que me parece educativo!
- You know, dad... this is true learning!!

Navidad / Christmas

Beyond the usual topics about Christmas (Jesus child, Santa Claus, snow and holly trees, etc.) each of us has his own personal recalls related to christmas. Can you believe it if I tell you that my childhood christmas recalls are strongly tied to a deep smell of plastic?. I swear it, it's due to my parents were ones of the first people owning a ecologist responsibility in Spain so when I was a child they bought a small plastic fir which stinked in a terrible way.

Now we grew up, and the little fir was recycled long time ago becoming a chair leg or an umbrella cover or guitar plectrums or something else, the symbols have changed. One of my favourites is the unevitable nonsense talkings to my brother. My brother Albar (astrophysicist in the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory) and me (unemployed worker) cover almost all the unuseful knowledge in the world. I cover more than him cause I'm older but he covers some useful knowledge to balance (I don't know any useful thing).

During the lasts christmas we've made some incredible progress: we developed the theory to understand the astrolabe, we founded a new method to light fire using volatile elements, we discovered the hidden connection between two non-consecutive dreams, we calculated the probability of a collision between two babies crawling inside a basket field... the list is endless.

While I was finishing today the demonstration of my new thesis about garbage accumulation during the collectors strikes as the evolution engine towards intelligence (garbage sapiens), Albar teached us about the Brewster's angle, that is, the angle needed for a sun beam to impact in a water puddle in order to be reflected instead of being refracted. A new masterpiece of unuseful knowledge.
¡¡Feliz Navidad a todos!!
Happy Christmas to you all!!

Manuela

Barcelona, december 24th. The family is still meeting: my brother Albar came today joined to his wife Maria and their one year aged daughter Manuela who I had never met yet. You can see her struggling for life in a love round against her two cousins: Elisa and Helena.

It's a pretty notorious fact that children inherit several behaviour patterns from their parents, some of them are quite amazing. For example, my daugher Helena uses to pick little bread crumbs moving her finger across the tablecloth (just like me). But the inheritance can even jump over the parents-children wall: Manuela shakes her body against the coach back the same way her aunt Silvia used to did. At a change, Silvia's son, Iker, doesn't show any behaviour similar to us so I guess he inherited from his father family.

Manuela is the youngest member of this crazy family. May the luck be with her.

Pirineos / Pyrenees

My family is wide spread across the spanish territory: my sister lives in Barcelona with her husband and children, my brother lives in Canary islands with his wife and daughter, I live alone in the Basque country and nobody knows where my father really lives, specially since he started to travel by walking around the world following the strangest routes.

This makes us to not meet too often, a quite atypical thing in the basques families whose members are used to live one next to the others. For example, I met my brother Albar for the last time 2 years ago. This could sound very cold but we are really close, in a sentimental sense.

We all will meet in my sister Silvia's, at Barcelona, for this Christmas so Helena and me have flown today early. Here it is a nice pic of the Pyrenees as viewed from the plane at 9:00 local time (8:00 GMT).

There are moments in which even someone like me can be so touched that cannot speak. They are very rare moments, surrounded by a strong emotion, that remain deeply printed in the memory. So I felt in the year's end lunch of the Ibermatica consultants.
My ex-workmates held, as usual, a lunch to cellebrate de end of the year and they invited me despite of I was fired some weeks ago (See Fired). I gladly attended, of course, 'cause during the time we shared they showed me to be marvelous and friendly people, so I really wished to meet them again. The lunch run normally, chatting about everything, joking and talking at different seriousness levels, until we had the desserts.

And then, suddenly, they gave me an incredible gift that brought me to tears (I could barely stifle them, cause men don´t cry, but it was hard to do it). This gift I'm talking about is not the nice t-shirt I'm wearing, or the cap going with it, or the barometer I'm holding in my hands, all of them are presents that I sincerely thank but they are just objects. The actual gift is their friendhip, their care, their support, the incredible warm their hearts are and their understanding, materialized in this bronze plaque I received from their hands which will be always nailed to the cabin door in any sailboat I command from now to ever.

Bricolage

Hugo has started some works in his home. He wants to change one of the rooms in his flat at Erandio and he thought I could help him. By some incomprehensible reason, some of my friends think that I'm quite handy (very strange thought since I'm a complete shoddy actually) and they trust in my amateur carpenter skills. This way, Hugo has bought some do-it-by-yourself forniture kits and has left them for me to mount while he has gone to paint the roof and the walls of the room.

Doppelganger

In the early 2007 I received an email from a girl. I didn't know her name and the message text also didn't help to clarify who was the sender or the mail sense. However, it was certainly sended to someone called German (like me). I had to quit thinking about a potential secret fan and infere that, simply, the sender had made a mistake while writing the adress. I just sended back a message noticing the error and went back to my business.

Some months later I received again another message by error, and it was sended by a woman too. This time, the mail was quite more explicit as it was an invoice and, this way, I could learn a lot of things about my "doppelganger": his complete name, his real address and even how much he paid for the service described in the invoice (obviously I don't reveal it attending to elementary moral reasons). Once more, I just answered noticing the error and went back to my business.

A few days ago, I received one more email following the same misterious trend: it was fowarded to a German, it was sended by an unknown woman and the text was uncomprehensible for me. But this time, the message contained a capital element: some pictures of my namesake dressed as Santa Claus which I sincerely regret to not publish because they are really funny. I acted like the other times, sending the warning and going back to my business.

;-). Bueno, y ahora si no os importa, sigo con mis asuntos.
Today, I've been very honoured of receiving a message from my namesake, who already is almost a family member, thanking me for answering the emails sended by error, avoiding this way that the got lost in the cyberspace. This little daily story and teach us a lot of things but I'll just take the two of them I like the most: men called German own a deep sense of humour and they are irresistible to women, as well. Am I right, German? ;-). Well, and now, if you don't mind, I'll go back to my business.
