I remember how charming was to watch movies at cinema with my father. We used to go alone, me child and him like two men. I still have vivid memories of many of those old movies. Now, I enjoy working together while restoring Lady Chatterley, trying to make a "period yacht" from an old sailboat. And I loved this weekend cooperating with him in the collection of donations for the Bizkaia Food Bank.

My father is an aid worker in this peculiar NGO, supported almost exclusively by generous retireds, which provides with food to 26.000 people in Bizkaia. We are not talking about poverty in the Third World, but about poverty in our own neighborhood. So called "embarrassing poverty" is rising up here, at home, and the number of claimers for food increases every year.

Me he equivocado ya tantas veces...

I do not know what is the solution to the critical situation we are living in. I had a feeling about it but I do not dare to state; I already made so many mistakes... that I rather leave how to fix the world to people wiser or braver than me. By now, I will follow a few simple customary rules:

  • - To take from the society only what I need to live.
  • - To contribute to the society with an effort focused on productive activities, giving an added value; to ignore especulative activities that do not add value.
  • - To be decent.

And the more chances to do it while sharing good experiences with my father helping other people, the better.

Tesalonica / Thessaloniki

Me encanta ir a Grecia.
I love travels to Greece. I like the landscapes, I like the gastronomy, I like the weather and I like the people. There are many places in the world where I feel comfortable but only a few ones (very few) where I feel like at home. Greece is one of those places. May be it is because we hace the same accent when speaking so the communication between grecians and spainyards is really easy, even if none of the native languages is used.

This time my job drove me to Thessaloniki, in the Makedonian area, a fresh city thanks to the many youg people along the streets, most of them are students in the Aristoteles University, the biggest one in Greece. Unfortunately, I lost all my photographs when the hard disk of my computer failed so if you want to see the city you'll have to check the Wikipedia ;-).

By way of compensation, let me publish an excerpt of my travel logbook, as it was written
back to the hotel:

Greece
March 2009

It's already night and I'm hungry. Not very much, I'd like to have some light dinner to not go to bed with an empty estomach. Since always, the choice of the place for having a meal takes me a long time. I'm simply unable to enter in the first restaurant I see. Oftenly, I
behave like a dog rounding on himself for a time before lying on the ground; I run the Thessaloniki streets in the same way in quest for a nice place where having my dinner.

  • Rule #1: chain restaurants are automatically forbidden, specially international chains.

  • Rule #2: people in the inside must unmatch the "tourist" stereotype.

  • Rule #3: shabby places are welcome

I dunno why but I like shabbies. Don't get me wrong: I mean shabbilogy, not shabbicracy. You can find a place meeting these three rules in any city if you walk long enough. Keep your eyes wide open and you'll find it. It's just enough to go to those narrow dark lanes that mothers would not recommend to their daugthers. So the flowers attracts the bees, the honey attracs the bears and the rubish attracts the flies... so those lanes attracts me.

After half an hour of quest, and having dismissed an Starbucks (good Lord!!) and others in the same way, I arrive to that wished lane, shaded and populated only by a small blackboard anouncing a misterious menu with unreadable greek characters. The stablishment is small and only three regulars, whose summed ages must exceed 200, drink slowly a bottle of retsina sitted in a corner. The owner looks like delinquent: short, squat, grim and slow gesturing, like he was moving accross the bottom of a swimming pool. No doubts: this is the place!!

I'm sitting to a table and the owner comes. No use in asking if he can speak english or any language other than greece. What the hell!! it's me who I'm in his country so if someone should speak a foreign language, that's me. I take the menu sheet and point two items at random with the finger. He wears his glasses and read them. He nods and vanish in the kitchen deeps. A little time later he's back carrying a basket with bread, a dish full of a grey paste and a beautiful bottle of water. Everything is left on the table and he goes.

The grey paste tastes like eggplant and it's very good, spreaded with olive's oil, you know those greek brown olives, so strong that you cannot eat them alone. I open the bottle, fill the glass and have a drink. Damn!! this is NOT water!! it is a sort of anisette. I wonder if it is usual to drink anisette in the greek meals. I know that bread and water is always provided but, anisette? I remind my order: I'm quite sure that the second line was something similar to Tsantalis. OK, I take the bottle and examine the label trying to translate from the greek alphabet (fortunately, I graduated in a scientific career). finally I can read tsantale. Uh oh... I thougth I was ordering a second dish and it was anisette, instead.

A new courtier from this local kingdom enters in that moment. It's more or less the same type of the owner but completely drunk. He asks for a glass of gin (no mixes), stares at me and salutes by lifting his glass towards me. I lift mine up to answer and we both finish our respectice drinks without stop staring each other. That was the beginning of my descent to the alcoholic abyss: the tsantale doesn't stay in the stomach but an evil osmosis let it access to the blood flow and quickly finds the brain. Using my lasts traces of sober wills, I order some kalamari (in spanish squids are named calamares) trying to ease the alcohol effects. Obviously is a vain try, because my first action is inviting the drunk guy in front of me to share the squids. He looks at me, smiles and shrug his shoulders. After that, he points to the owner, behind the bar, and close his lips with his finger: "keep silence, my friend" is telling me mute "I'd accept your invitation but the owner wouldn't like that". I know what he means, so I just drink again.

Just to while away the time I'm reading the "Le Sabotage amoureux" by Amelie Nothomb. Well, I'm not exactly reading. I'm quite drunk too and I need to read each paragraph no less than 3 times before understanding the meaning. More, when I finish the page I go back to the fist paragraph and start again. The characters dance in front of my eyes, I feel like floating and laugh with no reasons. And I'm glad that we are only a few locals in the restaurant and me. I'm sure they understand me. I don't dare to move because I fear to trip over the chair or even to knock over the table.

But I have to finally get up and pay the meal. I had a good dinner and got drunk with less than 15 euros. Gooooood. Y take a couple of notes with shaky hands. "Tsantale" I say to the owner while he smiles and probably thinks that all the tourists are a pansies. I leave a tip to round the 15 euros (may be that improves the owner's opinion about tourists), say goodbye to my inebriated friend and zigzag across the street heading to the coast.

¡Cielo santo! ¡¡Esto es vida!!
Once in the shore, I entered into a pub where I was so lucky of finding a table under a stand lamp where I slowly digested the alcohol with some help of a cocacola and the 53th page of the "Le Sabotage amoureux" until I recovered the forces to go back to the hotel. Oh my God, this is the life!!!

Descenso del Sella (y III) / Sella river descent (and III)

I came out of the kayak really quickly: it's amazing how agile you can be when you are inmersed in 9ºC cold water. Coming out of the kayak was easy but floating save was another thing. My thin neoprene (3 mm) swimsuit kept me not too cold but it was not enough for floating without some help. At least, I hadn't to worry about the rocks despite of the fast stream, there was so much water that I couldn't touch the bottom. I saw the water filling the kayak until it was half-sinked but it was impossible to reach it anyway. Iñigo went out of sight in the first moments. I swam with spirit to the shore aiming to catch the branches of some short trees. When I finally went out of the water I checked the situation: the kayak was lost, the paddle was lost, and one of my water shoes was lost, I was in the middle of nowhere and the only reasonable option was to walk downstream looking for the lost gear. Same as Jason in his way to Yolco, I walked along the shore withdrawing between the trunks, branches, nettles and hidden roots. Sometimes I had to jump back to the water to avoid the muddy points.

I found Iñigo one kilometer down. He was holding my kayak with one hand and trying to bale out with the other. He stared at me laughing (damned boy!). "What's up, pal? This is not like summertime, isn't it? ha ha ha". It was a relief for me to check that the kayak was recovered. In change, the paddle was definately lost so that was the end of the adventure for me. After assuring Iñigo that I was OK, he left and I stayed with the kayak full of water, an energetic bar and a bottle of water. I wished I also had a musket, a powder bag and a dozen of bullets, like the Bounty's rebels but instead of that I phoned Juanjo (the selfless land support) to ask him to rescue me with the Jeep. Fortunately one hr the bridhes over the Sella river was very close to where I was so it was a perfect reference point. Indeed, less than half an hour later we were raising the kayak over the embankment of the riverside.

I was very grumpy because that situation: I don't like to quit my adventures. While we were driving back to Ribadesella following the road along the river we saw our friends close to the end line. I still wore the swimsuit so I asked Juanjo to stop the Jeep and I quickly jumped into the water to join our friends. At the end, I could finish the last 500 meters by swimming and, although it's not a big deed, at least my humour improved noticeably.

Carlos and the kayaks needed 2 hours and 20 minutes to cover 19 kilometers. It's a great record, when compared to the 4 hours and 45 minutes we needed the previous year, and it's easy to understand how fast was the stream. It's been a nice adventure, but I hope I'll be more lucky next time.

Problems started soon. Carlos and Txutxo got into the water and left. Iñigo and me follow them immediately after but my friend's oar broke in the first paddle. Juanjo and Yolanda went to take an oar to replace the broken one while I rowed upstream to the starting point. I noticed that this kayak, lended by Iñigo, was much shorter than the one I used last year, it was more light and therefore more unstable. That was my first concern.

When we had the new paddle, 15 mins later, we followed Carlos and txutxo downstream. The stream was 4 knots or so, adding our own speed to keep the kayaks in control. The shores passed really fast. Iñigo stayed close to me and suddenly said: "You're doing it right; just keep as cold as you're in the sailboat". I think he wanted to calm me down but he got the opposite. Firstly, he couldn't avoid showing some anxiety in his voice and secondly, that's exactly the same technique I use with my passengers when things go hard at sea. The more smiling I am the more worried the passengers should be.

Indeed, the first rapids were clearly hard compared to the previous year. The kayak jumped ahead like a bolt and I could barely keep the bow to the front. I only saw eddies everywhere but, trying to not looking a pansy, just shutted up. It was quite clear anyway because the kayak turned 360º several times. Despite of Iñigo's smile I soon understood that this time I faced more than I could stand: those water conditions required mucho more technique and experience than I had. It was assessed in the next rapid, where I hesitated for some seconds between turning left or right and the kayak crashed an emerging trunk, and capsized half a second later.

Descenso del Sella(I) / Sella river descent(I)

One year had passed since last time I enjoyed with my friends Iñigo and Juanjo but, as it happens when there is a true friendship, it seemed to be yesterday when we meet up again. Iñigo's old jeep was overloaded with the kayaks and the gear which we was to use in the descent of the Sella river. Same as last year, the Ribadesella's town hall was the sponsor of Carlos Peña, who was to swim downstream, and his team (all of us). It was an attractive adventure for me because kayaking is an activity I don't usually practice and it lets me keep in contact with the water otherwise than sailboats.

Iñigo and Juanjo took me in Bilbao and we began our trip to Asturias, updating each others about all the news during the last year. It's only four hours driving to Ribadesella and we spent every minute chatting like parrots. The only incident we found on the road was a DYA's ambulance with a punctured tire. We stopped and helped the driver (DYA is a spanish NGO that, ironically, is aimed to help people with problems on the road; DYA stands for "Detente y Ayuda = Stop and Help"). We arrived Ribadesella just in time to have the dinner with Carlos, Yolanda and Txutxo who already were there.

This year descent had nothing to do respecting to the time before. Last year there was a big lack of water and this one the river was overflowded. When we arrived Arriondas with the kayaks we saw the abnormally grown downstream. It was very quick too. I remembered that last year we had to carry the kayaks across a wide stone river-bed before reaching the water. Now, in change, the water covered all the flow covered until the shores. That was good: at least we hadn´t to carry the kayaks again...

Torero / Bull fighter

By the moment you read this text, this guy besides me dressed like a bullfighter will be already married. As you can imagine, this was his stag night and, following the local tradition, his friends dressed him as a bullfighter and made him walk across the city. Notice that his friend (in the opposite side of the pic) is properly dressed too, wearing a nice txapela in his head and a PNV-style sweater on his shoulders. I don't know these guys at all, and I don't think I'll see them again. I was drinking a beer with Hugo in a bar when they entered showing a nice wish of enjoy.

I've never known the reason why so many people get dressed as a bullfighter in their stag nights. I guess it is fuzzy related to the fear that its supposed for the single who is to marry somebody soon. By becoming the prototype of the pure bravery (I mean the bullfighter, of course) the single can beat that fear, I suppose. I wish you good luck in your marriage, my dear stranger, and I hope not to meet you again the day you get divorced.

Mar Muerto / Dead Sea

My friend Carlos Peña, who already shared with me some adventures documented in this blog (see Swimming for peace and Sella river descent 1 and 2), asked me to be his representantive in the V Sport Challenges Contest. This is a yearly contest sponsorized by the MARCA sports journal and every sportmen/sportwomen can apply for it by certifiying to have completed some special adventure. so, in august, while I was enjoying the Mallorca sailing with my american friends, Carlos and his girlfriend Yolanda were sponsorized by the ecologist NGO Living Lakes to go to Jordania to take part in a amazing activity to draw the world's attention to the Dead sea, which is drying up quickly.

Carlos swam along al the Dead Sea's jordan coast followed by Yolanda kayaking behind him for assistance. They covered in total about 36 miles, north to the south, in five extremely hard legs. The Dead Sea owes its name to the excess of salt (it contains 10 times more salt than any ocean in the world) which don't permit any animals living in its waters. In fact, the jordan guides who assisted Carlos and Yolanda warned about the danger of their adventure by asserting there's no chance for staying more than 3 hours in the water without being hurted; so they said swallowing water woudl drive carlos to the hospital. Added to this, the temperature rose up above 45ºC (about 115ºF).

I'm always surprised by the the physical and psychological strenght of Carlos when facing this challenges. He finished this trip looking "pretty good": lots of hurts and burns covered his skin and however, he is ready now for our next adventure (I'll tell about it soon but i can say in advance that we are preparing something great for december). It is a big honour for me presenting him as candidate for this awards, and I hope he will win. The pics of this post are extracted from the dossier I sent to the award comitee.

Normal

A short time before flying back to the states, Nicole spontanoeusly gave me this nice pin as reminder of her (she didn't notice I don't need anything at all to remind her). I didn't watch it carefully so I saw just a face in it, no more. I thanked her, pined it up to my jacket and forgot it. When arrived home at took a slow look at it I saw it was much more than I perceived at first sight. Indeed, it was the shape of a face but inside you can read "I'm not normal".

This makes you wonder, what does it mean to be normal?. Let's check the dictionary, which contains the following description: "conforming with a norm or standard or level or type or social norm". I think now Nicole could not choose a better present for me, althought herself is not according to that description too. Thanks again Nicole, we both are abnormals, fortunately.

La nueva metacámara / The new metacamera

The summer accidents are being over, step by step. The metacamera was the first, she died in action while I was taking picutres of the sea bottom in the Cantera's cove. Later, the mobile phone jumped overboard while sailing in Mallorca and, to complete the disaster, the hard disk of my home computer broke and I couldn't post anything for a lot of time. Finally, everything was fixed but the first in dying, the metacamera, was still off.

This is the new metacamera. The Olympus technical staff concluded that the old one was practically destroyed and it didn't worth to repair so they were so kind of offering me this other one. I still haven't tested it deeply but at first sight is quite better than the old one. Hor example, this camera hasn't that damned delay when shooting pictures, typical of the compact cameras. Only that makes it a good deal already. And the image quality is better also, and so are the configuration options, the controls, etc. Olympus make things VERY GOOD, bravo for them.

I had to test it so, why not doing it the hard way? Rafa an me went to the beach for some wave riding and we checked the camera too. Well, the camera works good, as seen in the pics, but it is quite obvious that we (over all, me) need to loose some weight. Bathsuit pics cannot hide the truth!!

Mas constelaciones / More constellations

One of the usual blog's readers, mi brother Albar (those who met us, already know that, when in team, we both know about all: he's specialized in useful knowledge and I'm in useless one, so we cover all the human wisdom) made a personal experiment finding a quite convincing similarity between a group of holes in the sand and the Sagitarius constellation. I'd like to challenge him again to do the same with this wodden trunk partially eaten by woodworms. Thrifty Nature is not very original: she is repeating the same designs at any scale, in any place.

Gracia

While spending our last holidays in Barcelona, Nicole, Donna, Anna and me found ourselves suddenly inmersed in the Gracia district festival. We recorded this clip there and it clearly shows the atmosphere of the festival. It lets me write a little too (i'm really tired today) because, if a picture is worth a thousand words, is quite logic to think that a clip is worth a few millions of them.

Donna stayed 2 days at home and then we both took a bus to Barcelona, where we would join Tim, Jamie and Nicole, another hang glider who worked in the Monte Cucco competition as a driver and who had been invited by Jamie in the last minute. Donna and me were going to my sister's Silvia and the rest managed to get a room in a hotel in Barcelona. We all had made reservations for the flight to Palma de Mallorca months ago.

The bus trip was not very interesting, the monotony was only interrupted by the old bull shaped Osborne ads and the Greenwich meridian signpost (curiously, in all the trips I've ever made to Barcelona I've never seen a traveler who appearently noticed the pass of the meridian). Once we arrive to Barcelona, we spent some time in the rumbles (a sort of avenues famous because of being very noisy), drinking gallons of horchata until we received messages from Tim and Jamie, communicating their respective arrival plans: Tim came by train from France and Jamie and Nicole came from Italy. We met them besides the Sagrada Familia cathedral at noon.

I won't describe the encounter because I sincerely cannot. More than one year had passed since the last time we were together although we kept the contact via email, chat and our respective blogs. All those months brought us many events that surely changed our lives and our minds but, for me, it was like no time had passed at all. They suddenly came back to my life, and I could think our farewell in Zadar occurred the day before. In the year between those moments I thought many times about how this meeting would be and, when the moment came, I could only say a simple "Hi, you look pretty nice".

We spent the afternoon visiting the Sagrada Familia (by the way, Jamie didn't like it at all as she said in her blog) and, at sunset, Donna and me went to Silvia's. She was waiting for us whith her family and they received us very warm. At midnight we enjoyed a fantastic bath in their new swimming pool. My sister is building a nice palace step by step.

Donna

Donna's arrival to Bilbao completed a round that begun in summer 07. Donna Kay Davis is Bill's wife, one of the crew mates aboard of Lunga, during our trip across Croatia. Bill was also my room mate and he became an excelent friend and sailor. I deeply regreted he couldn't join us for the balearic adventure due to his summer study's plans but, in change, he strongly insisted his wife. Donna, to come with us although she had never sailed before.

It was great for me to host her in my home for a few days before going to Palma de Mallorca. This way we could go visiting some of the nicest places in Bizkaia's coast: the old town in Bilbao, the San Juan de Gaztelugatze church, the coastal villages, Nervion river and the conspicuous Guggenheim museum... This small woman, appearently weak and delicate, surprised me thanks to her tireless enthusiasm and noticeable physic resistance. Everything was Ok for her, she liked everything, she ate everything, she drank everything and no single time refused to participate in the plans I proposed to her. We even rode my motorbike along the coast from Getxo to Matxitxako's point for visiting the lighthouse.

I remembered well how impacted I felt by the way Bill spoke us about his wife, calling her "his best half". I must say that I absolutely agree with him. Now that I had the chance of meeting both of them, I cannot imagine a couple who better match each other: he is the driving energy and she provides the calmed sense of direction. I'm impatiently waiting the chance of meeting both of them again (at the same time).

Jose Luis de Ugarte, one of the greatest local sailors, has died. In fact, he is, upo to date, the only spanish yachtman to complete the Vendee Globe race (alone non-stop sailing around the world). I saw him oftenly in the port or in Sopelana and, in one ocasion, we shared the podium during the Andramari Race in Bermeo, where both of us lived, but I talked to him in just a few times. I cannot say, then, I really knew him deep.

He was considered an odd man, just like all the famous lone sailors: perfectionist, grumpy, lean to quick humour changes, honest, bossy, direct, inflexible and true. I'm not spend many more words because other people already did it but a blog like this one should contain an admiration note for a person marked with the signal of the big seamen. Thanks for being a model for us, José.

Look at this artwork masterpiece by Leyre, waitress of the La Roca del Fraile bar at Axpe. She does these drawings with the cream on the coffee. They made me think of mandalas, made of sand by the budist priest because, in some way, both of them are ephimeral artwork and, for that reason, absolutely unique.

Botia Payaso / Clown Botia

I found my fish lying on the bottom of the tank today early. This rare pose for a fish usually means that it's gone, paraphrasing that famous song. It really wasn't a surprise for me because I already noticed that it hadn't eaten anything in the last days and some ugly dark spots appeared along its body; this way, the Clown Botia fish (by the way, it was Coky who told me the genre of the fish, I didn't know it when I received it) decided to finish our 7 years of cohabitation.

I never knew its name and, to be true, I never knew most things about its life because we spent a very little time talking actually. Its little aquatic secrets are safe now. Things like this one make me beleive that relationships between humans and fishes probably cannot go very deep due to some obvious incommunication problems. And following this line, I quit maintaining more pets; all I've done is working cleaning the fishbowl, feeding and paying electricity to keep the water pump and heater running and I've just obtained in return the meager affection that a loosy fish can give. From now on I'll dedicate my time to chicks only; the work will not decrease for sure but the benefits are much higher indeed.

Conguitos

The conguitos are, probably, my only (confessable) vice. These chocolate covered peanuts produced by Lacasa company are simply delicious. Most of the people usually goes to the cinema carrying hugue pop corn boxes. Not me, I much prefer a packet of conguitos. I started loving them thanks to a bad fall I suffered when aged 6: I crashed a rock and hurted my hip, so I was moved to Basurto Hospital and admitted in the Gurtubay pavillion (by the way, this pavillion owes the name to one of my ancestors, not all of them are gallows fodder ;-)) for some weeks. I remember I felt those days as a dark eternity, always in the bed and sourrounded by other wounded children.

During all my stay in the hospital, mi grandfather Gerardo, didn't fail to come visiting me any single day. He always carried something for reading and a packet of conguitos. In those days, the packet contained not only the peanuts but a plastic scaled model of a train wagon. There were a dozen different models. Each day I enlarged my train with a new wagon. Logically I died for finding the locomotive in one of the packets for completing the train.

But the days passed slowly and I only had a lot of wagons, many of them were repeated. The day before to my discharge, my grandpa came with a packet, as always, and told me: "I'm feeling a hunch: you'll find the locomotive today". I opened the packet... and yes, the locomotive was in there!! I have completed my train.

Many years later, I knew that my grandpa had bought more than 20 packets in a shop and he had felt all of them with his fingers until he reckognized the shape of the locomotive.

I talked today to my mother in my dreams again. It's quite possible that somebody thought I'm going paranoic but, since my mother died in 2005 (next thursday it will be 3 years ago), I've seen her in my dreams several times. We're always boths of us alone and always in any kitchen, the place where we spent so many hours chatting when I was a child.

The first time was just two months after she died and it was really surprising because, in my dream, I entered into my little condo as a regular day after work and found her in my tiny kitchen. obviously, I got shocked. "Mum!! you died!!" I could barely say, "Not exactly" she answered "I know it had to be hard for you but it was necessary; however, we'll meet here from time to time". I waked up feeling my mind really messy. The dream was exceptionally vivid and I remembered to have read tales by people who lived similar experiences and call them paranormal. I don't believe in such things and my mother, as well as I know, didn't believe too. She was very clear at that respect: "when you die, you die. That's all".

In the 3 years past since then, the same situacion has remained half a dozen of time, just changing the scenary and the conversation topic. For example, we talked today about cooking. I told my mum how I made a fish cake for my first time. The fish cake is, probably, the dish I most relate to my mum because she made them damned tasty. The last week I saw one in a restaurant and I thought it was the moment for me to try making one so I opened the cooking book by Marquoise of Parabere (inherited from my mum) searching the recipe of the fish cake. Surprisingly, there was a pagemark just in the page I was looking for. I wondered, how many times my mum read that same recipe before I did?

Well, the fish cake was a success, objectively speaking so I told her in my dream. And then I couldn't avoid some tears any longer. My mum, showing that energy she always had in life, made me shut up pursing her lips: "German, boys don´t cry!!" but, after that, she gave me a lovely kiss to let me wake up with a longing smile.
