My friend Carlos Peña, who already shared with me some adventures documented in this blog (see Swimming for peace and Sella river descent 1 and 2), asked me to be his representantive in the V Sport Challenges Contest. This is a yearly contest sponsorized by the MARCA sports journal and every sportmen/sportwomen can apply for it by certifiying to have completed some special adventure. so, in august, while I was enjoying the Mallorca sailing with my american friends, Carlos and his girlfriend Yolanda were sponsorized by the ecologist NGO Living Lakes to go to Jordania to take part in a amazing activity to draw the world's attention to the Dead sea, which is drying up quickly.

Carlos swam along al the Dead Sea's jordan coast followed by Yolanda kayaking behind him for assistance. They covered in total about 36 miles, north to the south, in five extremely hard legs. The Dead Sea owes its name to the excess of salt (it contains 10 times more salt than any ocean in the world) which don't permit any animals living in its waters. In fact, the jordan guides who assisted Carlos and Yolanda warned about the danger of their adventure by asserting there's no chance for staying more than 3 hours in the water without being hurted; so they said swallowing water woudl drive carlos to the hospital. Added to this, the temperature rose up above 45ºC (about 115ºF).
