Descenso del Sella(I) / Sella river descent(I)

Hacía ya un año que no veía a mis amigos Iñigo y Juanjo pero, como siempre que la amistad es verdadera, el reencuentro fue como si nos hubiéramos despedido ayer mismo. El viejo Jeep de Iñigo estaba cargado hasta los topes con la ropa de agua y las piraguas que íbamos a usar este año en el descenso del Sella. Al igual que el año pasado, el ayuntamiento de Ribadesella nos patrocinaba a todo el equipo de Carlos Peña para hacer el descenso a nado. Para mi es una aventura muy apetecible porque el remo es una actividad que apenas he practicado en mi vida y me permite seguir en contacto con el agua al margen de los veleros.

One year had passed since last time I enjoyed with my friends Iñigo and Juanjo but, as it happens when there is a true friendship, it seemed to be yesterday when we meet up again. Iñigo's old jeep was overloaded with the kayaks and the gear which we was to use in the descent of the Sella river. Same as last year, the Ribadesella's town hall was the sponsor of Carlos Peña, who was to swim downstream, and his team (all of us). It was an attractive adventure for me because kayaking is an activity I don't usually practice and it lets me keep in contact with the water otherwise than sailboats.

Iñigo y Juanjo me recogieron en Bilbao y nos pusimos en marcha hacia Asturias poniéndonos al día a trompicones sobre las últimas novedades en nuestras vidas. Son solo cuatro horas de carretera que se hicieron cortitas al tener tanto de qué hablar. El único incidente fue que nos encontramos a una ambulancia de la DYA con una rueda pinchada y nos detuvimos a ayudarle un poco (los que conozcan el significado de DYA habrán notado el juego de palabras ¿no?). LLegamos a Ribadesella a punto de irnos a cenar con Carlos, Yolanda y Txutxo.

Iñigo and Juanjo took me in Bilbao and we began our trip to Asturias, updating each others about all the news during the last year. It's only four hours driving to Ribadesella and we spent every minute chatting like parrots. The only incident we found on the road was a DYA's ambulance with a punctured tire. We stopped and helped the driver (DYA is a spanish NGO that, ironically, is aimed to help people with problems on the road; DYA stands for "Detente y Ayuda = Stop and Help"). We arrived Ribadesella just in time to have the dinner with Carlos, Yolanda and Txutxo who already were there.

El descenso de este año no tuvo nada que ver con el del año pasado. Todo el agua que nos faltaba en el río el año pasado, nos sobraba en éste. Cuando llegamos a Arriondas con las piraguas vimos que el río bajaba muy crecido y muy rápido. Yo recordaba que el año pasado tuvimos que llevar las canoas por un lecho de piedras muy ancho antes de llegar al agua. Ahora, en cambio, la corriente anegaba todo el caudal hasta la orilla. Eso tenía su lado bueno: al menos, no tuvimos que cargar con las piraguas mucho tiempo..

This year descent had nothing to do respecting to the time before. Last year there was a big lack of water and this one the river was overflowded. When we arrived Arriondas with the kayaks we saw the abnormally grown downstream. It was very quick too. I remembered that last year we had to carry the kayaks across a wide stone river-bed before reaching the water. Now, in change, the water covered all the flow covered until the shores. That was good: at least we hadn´t to carry the kayaks again...
