Jose Luis de Ugarte, one of the greatest local sailors, has died. In fact, he is, upo to date, the only spanish yachtman to complete the Vendee Globe race (alone non-stop sailing around the world). I saw him oftenly in the port or in Sopelana and, in one ocasion, we shared the podium during the Andramari Race in Bermeo, where both of us lived, but I talked to him in just a few times. I cannot say, then, I really knew him deep.
He was considered an odd man, just like all the famous lone sailors: perfectionist, grumpy, lean to quick humour changes, honest, bossy, direct, inflexible and true. I'm not spend many more words because other people already did it but a blog like this one should contain an admiration note for a person marked with the signal of the big seamen. Thanks for being a model for us, José.
