Usually, trying to attract the attention towards oneself is not a signal of good taste, most of times it's really not indeed. However, sometimes it's possible to do it without behaving out of the protocol; for example, during the Carnival.

The people of the Basque Country is not specially known for being very fond of the customes and, in the best case, people usually wears anything more or less colourful. With this premises, the entering of a group of men in their forties, dresssed to kill, is a notorious event; even more if these guys are showing their intention to ride waves while wearing their customes.

This friday, after an open call from the El Pasillo Classic Surf Club, a dozen or so of old surfers joined with the clear wish of attract the attention over us (see the introductory note). We were the firsts in being surprised by our own imaginative proposals, and the public in the parking of La Salvaje beach were absolutely astonished with the arrival of Carlos, driving a rusty, hoodless Citroen 2CV that looked like rescued from the Jurassic.

The owner of the van next to us, a paraglider from valladolid, went out from his vehicle to take some photos. "Hey, who are you? Is this usual here?". He couldn't believe what he was seeing. Well, it´s normal, you only have to see the pictures to know that this show is not to be viewed every day.
Of course, we didn't come downstairs to the beach but we followed the narrow muddy path down from the cliff, just to see if someone slipped on the mud and got a little more of attention while rolling down the cliffside. There was no lucky guys and we all landed on the sand safe. The water was obviously cold but the sun shined and the warm temperature encouraged us to enter into the sea. The waves were not very big, quite nice to ride with the longboards.
It's said that the Cantabric sea water is very cold, same as the character of the natives. it's said that people from the south is much warmer. So many things are said... but,as a matter of fact seeing this pictures, we demonstrated that it's possible to organize a surf festival in the middle of winter with some enthusiastic people and a little of talent.

La nueva metacámara / The new metacamera

The summer accidents are being over, step by step. The metacamera was the first, she died in action while I was taking picutres of the sea bottom in the Cantera's cove. Later, the mobile phone jumped overboard while sailing in Mallorca and, to complete the disaster, the hard disk of my home computer broke and I couldn't post anything for a lot of time. Finally, everything was fixed but the first in dying, the metacamera, was still off.

This is the new metacamera. The Olympus technical staff concluded that the old one was practically destroyed and it didn't worth to repair so they were so kind of offering me this other one. I still haven't tested it deeply but at first sight is quite better than the old one. Hor example, this camera hasn't that damned delay when shooting pictures, typical of the compact cameras. Only that makes it a good deal already. And the image quality is better also, and so are the configuration options, the controls, etc. Olympus make things VERY GOOD, bravo for them.

I had to test it so, why not doing it the hard way? Rafa an me went to the beach for some wave riding and we checked the camera too. Well, the camera works good, as seen in the pics, but it is quite obvious that we (over all, me) need to loose some weight. Bathsuit pics cannot hide the truth!!

Like the last years, the Pasillo Classic Surf Club, started in 2003, signaled the beginning of the summer season holding a charming surf festival in Sopelana's beach. There's nothing really new to tell because it run more or less the same as the precedent editions. Of course, we enjoyed a superb day on the beach surfing or just lying down under the sun.

The waves were some rough due to the strong north wind and more, the low tide converted the usually regular lines in a sort of a mess of broken waves but, even so, we could wacht some pieces of good surfing. Fortunately we, who are members of the club, are not all a loosy rookies, there are some nice experts too. One more year, one more festival...

It rained, and rained and rained. All the day and all the night. Non stop. It looked more a waterfall than a simply rain. And therefore, the river overloaded and the flood came. This time the most damaged place was Getxo.

The garage below our building got flooded too and we had to take our cars away to avoid damages in the motors. That let me do something so unusual like searching for the cowabunga some meters under the ground level.

Last friday we held the season opening meeting in the El Pasillo Classic Surf Club, which is a bunch of about half a hundred souls specialized in remembering how good surfers we were a long time ago. Theoretically, that means that those who still row to the pointbreak sometimes should think in having a sea bath once at a week, at least.

However, our shape is not like 10 years ago (imagine 20 years ago) and a 13ºC water temperature is enough to bring down even the most braves of us. Connecting to the post about the lack of self confidence I posted a few days ago, I can tell you one good thing of beeing in the fabulous forties: I dare now to say: I won't surf 'cause the water is cold; that's was imaginable when I was younger.
More, to me, as well as the milestone for the end of the summer is the use of the wetsuit, so the beginning of the season is signed by the Easter holidays. Therefore, I still shall enjoy watching photographs of the good old days before my next dance with the mermaids.

Gavarnie

Yes, yes, finally!!!!! The last winter was impossible going any single day to skiing due to the lack of snow but now all the circumstances have been aligned to make a little trip joined to some good friends. The north face of the Pyrenees, the french side, contains dozens of fantastic skiing stations, all of them cheap and crowdless. So we decided to go to Gavarnie, at 2.500 meters high in the middle of the Pyrenees, we all very happy thanks to a favourable weather forecast and knowing it was a 2-3 meters snow layer below us.

On the left you can see Victor: from Granada, easy, kind, funny and joint's user: he's now making his personal inside-outside voyage along the north Spain, accumulating a great popular wisdom in his way. In the center you can see Ander: hyperactive, hyperfriendly, hypersportman, hypervoyager, superlative in whatever he does, worldwide nomad and a deep Geography and History erudite. On the right you can see the trampskipper: if you want to know more just read the previous posts in this blog.

¿qué íbamos a hacer?
I don't pretend to provoke any envie but we really enjoyed our time. Well, a perfect snow, in labour days, very few people on the tracks... what could we do? I was glad to check that my old snowboard (it's 18 years old now, so it's of age) stands the turns backwards yet.

From Gavarnie station it's possible to watch the famous Brèche de Roland, on the left of Taillon peak. According to the legend, Roland was beated in Roncevaux and forced to run away; followed by his enemies, Roland used his sword Durendal to open a gap in the stone wall and he got scape (this gap was used later by many smugglers between France and Spain).

The members of El Pasillo Classic Surf Club closed the 2007 season holding an exhibition of old photos and homemade films in Jolaseta. We are glad about this year participation, almost all the members came to the events (even to those ones held INTO the water, ha ha ha).

We were honoured to introduce Dr. Iñaki Riaño, otolaryngologist, who made an interesting speech about exostosis, a very frequent infection in people who enter to cold waters and it's commonly called the "Surfer's ear".

We also received the visit of such great local surfers like Enrique Artero and Ignacio "el buta". The ceremonies master, unbeated Julito del Val, gave to Artero some ancient posters printed for corresponding late 70's competitions. He promised to put them in his huge surf museum.

Buta made his contribution too, showing to us a nice surf movie. It was filmed by his brave wife in the early 80's using the old Super 8mm format. Once more, we were shocked by those old days fashion: our clothes, the cars, the surf boards, the swimsuits, the hair style and, I must say, the waves quality (they look much better than now).

And that was all: one succesful meeting more that mirrors our club is pretty healthy. Now we have to be ready for snow (it should fall soon).

In my personal calendar, summer doesn't end until the very first day I have to wear a wet suit. While water is warm enough to spend one hour and a half riding waves, wearing just a bath suit, the summer's still on. That way, I hold on tight to my illusion, feeling every day a bit colder, a bit blue, and, over all, a bit pudd'nhead, until the day I cannot stand it anymore and I'm forced to add a neoprene layer over my skin. Even so, today I just wore the short one.

As I said, summer ended today.

Some days ago I went to watch the movie "Surf's up" which I was impatiently waiting for since I looked at the very first trailer in the begining of this year. I was shocked by that trailer for two reasons: a breathtaking imaginery (it's incredible to see the current works made by infographics) and a quite emotional intro, regarding an old surf legend.

I uploaded today the movie review in El pasillo Classic Surf Club webpage (sorry, in spanish only, but if you enter the web you can also see some nice pics of local brave men fighting the ocean, never forget to see the right side of the life...). If you still want to read it please clic here: Surf'sup review.
