Dientes / Teeth

Dentists are probably one of the most commonly believed well paid professionals. I don't know if it's true, in my life I only met one dentist: my dear friend Silvia, who crossed Morocco with me riding every type of crazy vehicules. I remember Donna, too, who is dental hygienist and, although it is not exactly the same, at least it's quite similar. None of them is reach so may be the fame is no more than yet another urban legend. Nevertheless, my usual dentist gave me a dental prosthesis last week and it wasn't cheap so no danger of starvation for dentists, anyway.

The funny thing is that she gave me the models of my teeth too. The prosthodontists need them to make the artificial teeth only once so I could take them for my own, after that. Thanks to these models, now I know that I suffer a mandibular biretrusion, which means, more or less, that my teeth are lean to the inside, just like the shark's jaws, what I believe is very useful to avoid the prey running away once you got it properly bitten. I think I'll place the models in a priviliged position in my domestic horror little museum.

La nueva metacámara / The new metacamera

The summer accidents are being over, step by step. The metacamera was the first, she died in action while I was taking picutres of the sea bottom in the Cantera's cove. Later, the mobile phone jumped overboard while sailing in Mallorca and, to complete the disaster, the hard disk of my home computer broke and I couldn't post anything for a lot of time. Finally, everything was fixed but the first in dying, the metacamera, was still off.

This is the new metacamera. The Olympus technical staff concluded that the old one was practically destroyed and it didn't worth to repair so they were so kind of offering me this other one. I still haven't tested it deeply but at first sight is quite better than the old one. Hor example, this camera hasn't that damned delay when shooting pictures, typical of the compact cameras. Only that makes it a good deal already. And the image quality is better also, and so are the configuration options, the controls, etc. Olympus make things VERY GOOD, bravo for them.

I had to test it so, why not doing it the hard way? Rafa an me went to the beach for some wave riding and we checked the camera too. Well, the camera works good, as seen in the pics, but it is quite obvious that we (over all, me) need to loose some weight. Bathsuit pics cannot hide the truth!!

FIAT 500

¡¡Toma, toma y toma!!
Not so long ago, I posted some pics I took to a SEAT 600, decorated for a wedding and I composed a nice ode for this remarkable car. As life makes intelligent people go one step further each day I've been attentive since then and let me show you this masterpiece I found in Brussels (Belgium) some days ago: a FIAT 500!! the actual predecessor of the 600, and born thanks to an idea by Benito Mussolini himself and later inspiration for Adolf Hitler to promote the building of the archifamous Volkswagen beetle. Wow, wow and wow!!

SEAT 600 E

Hey, a 600!! And it's maked up for a wedding. What's up? what a bizarre idea for starting a marriage, I love it. Here it is, the car that became the symbol of a generation. It was designed by the italian engineer Dante Giacossa, the first unit in spain was manufactured in 1957 and it was a revolution for the spanish cars market. This one in the pic is the 600E model, built in 1970-1973, so it has, more or less, the same age as my Lady Chatterley. If I marry some girl in the future I'd like to use a car this style to leave the ceremony. I'd add only one thing: making it convertible.

Oxido / Rust

I'm certainly not happy with this July: I've been working like a dog sitted, at my desk, preparing an endless tender for the European Comission (notice the lack of posts in the blog this month). In the other side, my poor boat is suffering the consequences of not maintaining it properly, and she needs about 2 thousands of working hours, urgently. I'm falling into negligence, indeed.

¡¡Caca!!
For example: this is how the toolbox looks. It seems that some water filtered inside the box during the last hard rain (see surfing in the garage) and, because i didn't spend all the necessary time to check the boat properly, I didn't notice it until today when it's, obviously, too late. I could only save a couple of screwdrivers from the rust. SHIT!!

Atomium

Finally!! I got it!! I've been trying to take a damn picture from the air to the Atomium in every travel to Brussels. I had good chances a couple of times but I hadn't got my camera in those moments. This time, while coming back from my progress report presentation in the Eurasil I could get this snapshot using the turn to left by our old Avro RJ 100 over the city, after taking off with 1 hour only delay. (Anyway, the picture is not good, Jamie is who really knows how to shot pictures from the planes).

Nope, I'm not meaning the homonimous book by Khaled Hosseini, it's just Helena and me who went to the beach to run our superpro kite in this windy day (my pre-teennager daughter doesn't like to use the wind for a good sailing anymore, she little fool).

Easy rider

Before owning a sailboat, my usual transport when travelling was the bike. I run along all the north Spain riding my old Trek, always choosing secondary roads, sleeping there where the nigth felt and talking to everyone who wanted to tell me something... sumarizing: enjoying the slow way. I still have got my bike but now I only use it to go fast to close places, and we did the last travel together a lon time ago.

So, when my friend Xarma and me saw this wonderful while rolling in Getxo, we couldn't avoid stopping to take some pictures. The owner hasn't come from overseas Bolivia riding it, of course, but sure he spent a few hours customizing his bike.

Mi tia y la Alfa / My aunt and the Alpha

I wrote some time ago a post titled "boats are for richmen", talking about the maintenance tasks in a boat. It's usually said that the work to set the boat in good conditions never ends and it's certainly true. In fact, it's so true that there's another famous sentence: "there are two happy days in an owner life: the day he buys the boat... an the day he sells it!".

Well, it's true that we spend half of the time complaining but it's also true that we enjoy the other half learning lots of things. The old boom cover was so damaged that I asked for help to my aunt godmother Ana to sew some rips and to make some amendments I thought to enhance the cover. My aunt, who is the incarnation of the goodness in the Earth and have already earned Heaven for her and the rest of the family, accepted and she inmediately took her sewing machine.

It may sound crude but numbers don't lie: Lady Chatterley is 35 years old, my aunt is 72 so it made sense that the sewing machine was a Alpha model built in 1950. Originally, the machine was moved by actioning a pedal with the foot but in the 60's my aunt's brother, my uncle Pedro fitted an electric motor feeded with 125 volts electricity. Obviously, to make the machine work we had to use a 230V-125V adaptor which would look very nice in a museum. The overall set looked like taken from a Flash Gordon comic.

The result was worthy anyway and the cover was completely repaired. It's already installed again and serving its purpose. I think this time the gremlins felt generous with us when they saw our equipment.

Otra vez Murphy / Murphy again

"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" says the most popular version of Murphy's law. A little more than a month ago, I lost the boat's propeller, which it's a rare event itself (I think it was lost, not stolen) and therefore I ordered a new one, received last week by mail from the Barcelona factory.

To take the boat out of the water was easy, to put the lock into its place was easy, to install the propeller in the shaft was easy, to insert the washer in the propeller was easy. So in the last step to finish, when the only action was to screw the nut to fix the propeller the disaster came: the nut didn't fit the thread.

It was needed 5 hours, half a dozen people giving their respective "expert" opinion, 3 trips to search different tools to places no less than 3 miles away, and an important anger before finding the problem: the nut had an inverted thread!! The factory sent the right nut but with an inverted thread.

Gracias, Murphy.
Fortunately, Josetxu had another nut of the same size and right thread so the boat could finally be launched again with the new propeller installed. However, all the saturday afternoon and evening were lost. Thanks, Murphy.

Puropipa / Cigarpipe

A good way to start the new year is learning something completely different. This new year's eve I was with Coky in her parent's at Galapagar, in north of Madrid, where some other family members joined us. The meal was absolutely normal, considering the spanish standards, that is, we ate and drank like if it was our last day on earth.

After the new year's struck, Isidro wanted to smoke a bit and, please, look how he loaded his pipe!!

I've called this innovative smoking as the Cigarpipe.

Carola

I went today to the traffic department to get my new car documents and, thanks to the old fashioned burocracy, typical of that office, I've had a large time to watch the landscape behind the windows while I waited a queue for more than one hour. The most notorious element one can watch from this point is Carola: this big red crane, sole survivor of the several cranes which was placed in the former, and missing now, Euskalduna boat builders.

Antonio "el pira" ("pira" is for crazy, it's the nickname given to him in the docks) was one of the crane operators at Euskalduna and he handled this 30 tons mass built by Talleres Erandio in 1957. He used to say that all the crane bended when loading very heavy parts, despite of being the most powerful one ever manufactured in Spain, so he thought in several times everything was to collapse. May everyone imagine the feeling of the moment.

Each crane was called by a female name and some day I'll ask Antonio to tell me the name for all of them. This one is very famous because the crane is currently property of the Bilbao Maritime Museum and there's a text explaining the story. It's said that it owes its name to a woman who lived in Deusto (neighbourhood located on the other side of the estuary) and who crossed the estuary everyday to work. She was so beautiful that the work of the labourers came to a halt when she passed by. Due to the commotion and delays, the shipyard manager offered a car to take her to work, but she refused and continued crossing the estuary as always. It's said too that many of the workers used to climb the crane to watch her a little more time ;-).

En venta / For sale

I bought this beautiful car one year ago realizing this way one of my old not yet accomplished wishes: to own a convertible. I'm very happy with it: the engine runs well, it has no painting defects, the body has no hits, and it's a really funny car: If you don't believe me just see how cool Helena and me both look when we go for some surfing to the beach.

Everything ends some day and I must sell it now :-(. I've been offered a deal I can't refuse so, painfully, I'll put an ad in the internet this week (I'll publish all the details in the ad but I already fixed a starting price about 1.900 euros). If anyone is interested on it,or knows somebody who could be, please contact me in the usual email addresss: germantxu@hotmail.com.

No, it isn't a 007 agent movie, it is the metro Operations Control Centre (OCC) in Bilbao. during the last weeks I've been doing an intense technologic consulting work (yes, the trampskipper works for money too... sometimes) for Metro Bilbao S.A. and after asking for it, and asking for it and still asking for it, I finally got granted access to the operative train control quarters.

After this visit two main conclusions can be inferred. The first one is that, after all, movies are not exagerating as much as we may think, since the OCC can really control every operation quite precisely. The second one is that there aren't any single corner in the metro without close surveillance so, be careful and don´t think any nonsense while you're inside. The Pelham 123 guys did it well atacking just the New York metro instead of doing it in Bilbao. They would have no chance here ;-).

After the "really hard" training in the Ebro river (see the post below this one), our hosts Carlos and Txutxo decided to invite Juanjo and me to a dinner based of lamb steaks. They used then the most rustic (and the most eficient too) b-b-q I've ever seen in all my life: just a bended metal sheet. They put some firewood on it and we soon enjoyed a warm live coals.

There's not really new indeed, it was just a simple b-b-q. The shock came after the steaks were well done, when Txutxo took a "brasero" and put the live coals left inside of it. Then he put the whole set under the table we were going to have our dinner. I had heard about "braseros" but I considered them as a mostly medieval tool but now I've tried one I must tell that it is a very nice heater for cold rooms.

Regarding lamb steaks, they were so tasty I waited till the dinner's end to confess I'm vegetarian ;-).

Construyendo barcos / Building boats

His name's Isidro, he's retired, quiet, lives in the middle of Spain, 250 miles to the closest coast, he has never sailed and even so, he's a model boat builder with more than a hundred finished boats. His workshop is a bird's cage where it's absolutely impossible to find anything, except for him. It looks a warehouse plenty of tools, old photographs, wood, tissues, recalls and patience.

He has built every type of boats: tall ships, school ships, classic fishing boats, modern fishing boats, Mississipi river steamboats, America's Cup race sailboats, passenger vessels, roman ancient war ships, cargo vessels... everything!

He builds their models without having any idea about the actual utility of the elements but, however, he gets everything in the correct place. It's incredible.

¡BIEN! ;-)
It's quite ironic it's been here, in the farest point from the coast of this country, where I met somebody who I can talk to as much as I want about boats. And more, He promised to build a model of "Lady Chatterley" for me. GREAT!! ;-)

Last post referenced a quite symbolic travel so this post will do the same but a just real one instead. Last friday i borrowed my father's fantastic Audi 80 and started my particular road movie changing Paris by Sopelana (the small village where I live) and Texas by Madrid (the capital of the kingdom). That is, 230 miles at the maximum speed that Spanish Traffic Department allows to citizens who own a driving license.

Somewhere in the middle of the beautiful region of Burgos, I clearly saw a house roof emerging over the cars in front of me so, suspecting the news behind the appeareances, I take the meta-camera out of its cover trying to take not myself out of the road at the same time. I was lucky and I could snap these 2 shots avoiding being seen by any traffic cop. The pics quality is certainly not good but I haven´t any time for preparation while driving at 70 miles/h.

It's a pity that Jamie bought her condo so recently, and that she already demolished the walls by kicking them. I guess she's not interested at all in a new offer but sure she would have appreciated to know about these type of rolling houses BEFORE buying hers. That way, she could go to those hang gliding competitions she loves, knowing that she'll sleep in the same bed each time. Sorry Jamie, it was my fault, I should have gone to Madrid sooner...

Procrastinando / Procrastinating

Alucinante... ¿o no?

An interesting entry in the Wikipedia says that "procrastination is a type of avoidance behaviour which is characterised by deferment of actions or tasks to a later time". Obviously, when you are at your work, any activity that is not directly related to the purpose of your job is clearly making you fall in this type of misbehauviour so I must confess myself guilty for some minutes last morning.

The reason to the previous paragraph is that my workmate Victor, a surprising, very funny and really rare guy, came today to my desk showing me a simply surrealist artifact: a recipient heater feeded by the computer power and connected throw the USB port (????); and it is also a USB port enhancer so you can connect to the heater even more artifacts in serial mode.

I couldn't avoid stop working in the extremely intrincate drawing of a lottery business process diagram which I was fighting to (that was my duty at that moment), and to build this technological beauty and to take a couple of pics to it (that is, I procrastinated).

Results: a heater working at full throtle thanks to the power supplied by my desktop; please, notice the memory card attached to the heater to show the multipurpose capabilities of the whole stuff.

Excellent!!.... not?

During our sailing travel around Croatia last July, I noticed the excellent qualities of Timothy's aquatic camera. He obtained such remarkable pics that I decided to buy one the same model. I reckon that I'm not a good photographer (I'm not a photographer, actually, I just put my camera in front of me and push the button, half of the times the focus is facing me!!) but, at least this camera will stand the hits and water dumps while sailing.

My friend Natalia kindly let me try it in her swimming pool, but she absolutely refused to enter into the cold water to take the pics. Well, there I had the type of challenge I like to solve: to take an underwater pic of me without handling the camera. Fortunately, the automatic shoot was invented just after the magnesia flashlight so every modern camera is equiped with it.

The point, then, was to put the camera on the bottom of the swimming pool in a stable position, switch the automatic shoot on, get out of the water, count a 15 seconds timeout and jump inside the water again at the same time the pic was taken. It looks very easy, isn't it? Well, it isn't indeed. Sometimes the camera fell and took a black pic, other ones I was out of the frame, other ones I miscalculated the timeout, other ones I got an splendid pic of some blue empty water... to get this shit of a pics I had to repeat the whole operation... 30 times!!!

To be a photographer is a risky business, I think I'll continue as a text reporter for a while yet.
