Donna

Donna's arrival to Bilbao completed a round that begun in summer 07. Donna Kay Davis is Bill's wife, one of the crew mates aboard of Lunga, during our trip across Croatia. Bill was also my room mate and he became an excelent friend and sailor. I deeply regreted he couldn't join us for the balearic adventure due to his summer study's plans but, in change, he strongly insisted his wife. Donna, to come with us although she had never sailed before.

It was great for me to host her in my home for a few days before going to Palma de Mallorca. This way we could go visiting some of the nicest places in Bizkaia's coast: the old town in Bilbao, the San Juan de Gaztelugatze church, the coastal villages, Nervion river and the conspicuous Guggenheim museum... This small woman, appearently weak and delicate, surprised me thanks to her tireless enthusiasm and noticeable physic resistance. Everything was Ok for her, she liked everything, she ate everything, she drank everything and no single time refused to participate in the plans I proposed to her. We even rode my motorbike along the coast from Getxo to Matxitxako's point for visiting the lighthouse.

I remembered well how impacted I felt by the way Bill spoke us about his wife, calling her "his best half". I must say that I absolutely agree with him. Now that I had the chance of meeting both of them, I cannot imagine a couple who better match each other: he is the driving energy and she provides the calmed sense of direction. I'm impatiently waiting the chance of meeting both of them again (at the same time).

Baleares

No more than two months after returning from our trip in Croatia en July 07 (see the post by Tim), Jamie and me discussed about making another trip keeping, if possible, the same crew we enoyed so much. Jamie's idea was to set a sort of a tradition for us. In those dates Timothy was lost in the ocean inmersed in the Clipper 07/07 race (sailing around the world) as one of the crew members of the Uniquely Singapore, so we couldn't count with him except in the few days they were docked in some remote port. So, knowing that Tim was out of the game, I happily assumed the task of organizing a new trip, aiming to share some days with my dear friends again (some of them are the most interesting people I've ever met).

Same as last year, we had severe calendar constrains: the hang gliding world competition, sport that Tim and Jamie practice and even more, Jamie is a member of the German female flying team, was to be held in july in Italy and that forced us to choose august for our adventure. Regarding the geography, my first choice was the Caribbean sea, but unfortunately I had to quit as soon as I checked august was in the middle of the hurricanes season. My second choice was a fantasy, the Polynesian sea, because I've wishing to sail there since lots of years ago (I'd love to visit the Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb in Vaea mountain. This option was rejected too when checking the flights and boat rental prices (I'll try again next year).

Finally, and noticing that I had wasted much time, I reminded my weekend aboard of the Ipar Haizea, in february, so I phone Fernando, the owner, to know about the possibilityof renting it in august. He signaled it was free in those dates and offered a good deal: quite lower rates than a normal bareboat company. After agreeing with Tim and Jamie, the Balearic islans were fixed as our next sailing target.

SEAT 600 E

Hey, a 600!! And it's maked up for a wedding. What's up? what a bizarre idea for starting a marriage, I love it. Here it is, the car that became the symbol of a generation. It was designed by the italian engineer Dante Giacossa, the first unit in spain was manufactured in 1957 and it was a revolution for the spanish cars market. This one in the pic is the 600E model, built in 1970-1973, so it has, more or less, the same age as my Lady Chatterley. If I marry some girl in the future I'd like to use a car this style to leave the ceremony. I'd add only one thing: making it convertible.

The tiny beach called La Cantera is one of our last refuges left. Its position in the coast reminds me somehow the Asterix's village: a small naturist place sorrounded by the foolishness typical of that civilization that, step by step, consume us. I discovered this place by coming with my parents when I was a child; the way to arrive was then a thin muddy path in the middle of a jungle. The path have become a wide track now and many people come to have a sun bath but it's still a lovely place.

It would be a perfect place to anchor the sailboat for a weekend except by 2 inconveniences:

- the area is too exposed to the waves from the northeast. It's only possible to anchor in quiet days.

- the sea bottom is rocky and the anchor can be easily hooked. It's not rare to have a diving for freeing it.

In the other hand, there are 2 clear advantages:

- The water is much cleaner than any other place in this coast

- It's a nudist beach. That means that you can swim to the beach without the damn bathsuit, drink something in the hippy bar behind the beach and enjoy a sun bath completely naked, wich is the only decent way to do it.

Oferta / Tender

Finally, I did it!! I finished my last tender for the European Comission. To end it up I have worked hard every day of July coordinating the efforts of 3 different teams in order to obtain a cross-disciplinary text enabled to compete with some chances for success. For that reason, I couldn't spend much time in any other activity like posting the blog or even just going out with my friends. I'm really returning from the death.

Seeing the results it looks more like a damned book than just a tender. Well, it contains more than 4 hundred pages indeed. I'm sincerely sorry for the EC evaluators who will have to read a "block" like this one for each competitor in the call.

Jose Luis de Ugarte, one of the greatest local sailors, has died. In fact, he is, upo to date, the only spanish yachtman to complete the Vendee Globe race (alone non-stop sailing around the world). I saw him oftenly in the port or in Sopelana and, in one ocasion, we shared the podium during the Andramari Race in Bermeo, where both of us lived, but I talked to him in just a few times. I cannot say, then, I really knew him deep.

He was considered an odd man, just like all the famous lone sailors: perfectionist, grumpy, lean to quick humour changes, honest, bossy, direct, inflexible and true. I'm not spend many more words because other people already did it but a blog like this one should contain an admiration note for a person marked with the signal of the big seamen. Thanks for being a model for us, José.

Oxido / Rust

I'm certainly not happy with this July: I've been working like a dog sitted, at my desk, preparing an endless tender for the European Comission (notice the lack of posts in the blog this month). In the other side, my poor boat is suffering the consequences of not maintaining it properly, and she needs about 2 thousands of working hours, urgently. I'm falling into negligence, indeed.

¡¡Caca!!
For example: this is how the toolbox looks. It seems that some water filtered inside the box during the last hard rain (see surfing in the garage) and, because i didn't spend all the necessary time to check the boat properly, I didn't notice it until today when it's, obviously, too late. I could only save a couple of screwdrivers from the rust. SHIT!!

Look at this artwork masterpiece by Leyre, waitress of the La Roca del Fraile bar at Axpe. She does these drawings with the cream on the coffee. They made me think of mandalas, made of sand by the budist priest because, in some way, both of them are ephimeral artwork and, for that reason, absolutely unique.

Mal día / bad day

We haven't enjoyed this weekend at all. Even more, it has been quite a shit. At least, the saturday we sail with nice wind from the stern and we arrived to Elantxobe although we crossed a hard rain that got us pretty wet. On the other side, Gaiza, my father's little dog, was very afraid of the boat and she spent all the trip crying and shaking (fortunately she didn't vomit). Later, during the night, the rain didn't stop falling a single minute so I refused to go out of my berth to check the lines to the dock and get soaked.

But the worst thing was the trip back on sunday, sailing against the wind and the waves. Mi poor father resisted bravely but the permanent heeling, the cold water sprays and the rain made him finally get very sick. I knew we still had to sail for more than 7 hours against the wind so I decided to start the engine but when I check the gas in the tank I had the nasty surprise of counting no more than 2 litres of oil. Obviously it wasn´t enough to reach the port.

Anyway, my father was really bad so I took a heroic resolution: start the engine and let the propeller do the hard work until we were out of gasoil. 2 hours later the exhaust pipe coughed and the engine stopped, just in the same moment we passed Cape Villano and the wind moved from the bow to our side so we could sail again. After all we faced in this trip, the docking by sailing was a children game.

Traineras

This weekend I was completely alone, so I thought to use my time for some tramping aboard the sailboat. When I had set my baggage (a sweater, a jacket and a book, to have something to read by night; the tramps don't need anymore) I remembered my father, another pretty sample of a nomad, was back from France so I phoned him to invite joining me. As expected he immediately accepted and just took his radio set (he quited to read some time ago because he didn't believe anything in the papers; he doesn't believe the radio too but he says is more confortable to just listen than to read), his litle dog Gaiza and we three launched.

Just out of the port we saw these traineras (nothing to do with trainees) preparing for a race in one hour. From all the types of rowing modalities the trainera deserves a special clap. Formerly, the basque fishermen used to hunt the whales which came next to the coast with these boats after sighting them from the watchtowers. There are no whales here now so they spend their time in races currently. When overtaking one of them the rowers looked at us, without stop rowing fiercely and, for a moment, I got embarrased of being lazily sitted while the wind pushed our sails doing all the work.
