El paso de Mallorca a Menorca es bastante corto, se puede hacer en una pocas horas. Pero aún así puede resultar un tanto tedioso para la gente que no está acostumbrada a navegar de contínuo y/o que no tiene tareas que hacer en el barco. Decidí que lo mejor era hacerlo durante la noche y así no perderíamos un día entero navegando por el canal. Además era una buena ocasión para hacer una navegación nocturna, cosa que siempre recomiendo a cualquier habitante de ciudad que quiera sorprenderse de las noches en alta mar.

To cross from Mallorca to Menorca is not a long sailing, it's quite possible to do in just a few hours. Even so, it can be some tedious for the people not used to sail during a long time non stop and/or when they haven't any specific task to do aboard. So the best option was to cross the channel during the night and that way we wouldn't waste a whole day sailing the open sea. It was a good ocasion too for a nigh sailing, one thing that I enfatically recommend to anyone who wishes to be surprised by the open sea's nights.

Calculé la salida sobre las 23:00 con idea de llegar a Menorca con el amanecer y poder fondear con luz diurna. Y así zarpamos, con toda la gente muy emocionada por navegar de noche. Suele pasar, casi siempre que lo propongo toda la tripulación se apunta a la navegación nocturna. Eso sí, a medianoche ya solo estábamos en cubierta Tim y yo. El resto estaba durmiendo el sueño de los justos en sus respectivas literas.

I calculated the launch about 23:00 for arriving Menorca at dawn and using the daylight for the anchoring maneuvre. So we launched with all the crew quite excited about the night sailing. It's always the same, every time I've proposed a night sailing all the crew have agreed but, at midnight, it was just Tim and me on deck. The rest of the crew was having nice dreams in their respective beds.

Tim se encontraba bastante mal, con un resfriado importante, y no estaba en condiciones de ayudarme por lo que le pedí que durmiera un rato y que ya le avisaría para su guardia. Por supuesto, ya no le desperté en toda la noche. Contrariamente a lo que suelen hacer otros patrones, a mi me encanta navegar de noche y no suelo establecer guardias sino que hago toda la noche yo solo y luego me voy a dormir por la mañana, cuando los demás se despiertan. Esa noche fue muy buena, con un viento suave y cálido que nos hacía avanzar a 4 nudos y una mar muy calmada. Además, vi un montón de estrellas fugaces y un eclipse de luna.

Tim was quite bad, suffering a big cold, and he couldn't help me so I begged him to sleep for a while and don't worry about me, I would wake him in case of real need. Of course, I didn't. Contrarily to most of the skippers, I enjoy a lot sailing by night and don't like the watches method. I prefer to stand all the night and go to sleep after the dawn, when some mate can relieve me. That night was very special: light and warm wind and quiet sea, the boat going 4 knots, lots of shooting stars and, incredible, a moon eclipse!!

Los faros de Menorca aparecieron pronto en el horizonte y se fueron distanciando poco a poco a medida que nos acercábamos. Llegamos a cala Macarella justo al amanecer, según lo calculado. Detrás quedaban varias horas de ese silencio insomne y oscuro que hace que incluso el patrón más duro se vuelva ligero e incorpóreo, completamente fundido con el barco, la mar y la eternidad. No se puede explicar, hay que vivirlo.

Menorca's lighthouses appeared soon behind the horizon and they looked to move away each other when we got close to the island. We arrived Cala Macarella just at down, according to the calculations. I left behing some hours inmersed in that dark and sleepless silence that can make the hardest skipper become light and deeply lonely, merged to the boat, the sea and the eternity. It's impossible to explain, you must live it to know.
